What you can't see, out of shot, is the rest of the brass band.

Hehe, that's funny :)
Also, taking the time to look at the background, I must say it's beautifully done. The way the colours go into each-other...
I don't see many works using watercolours. Isn't that one of the more difficult way to paint if you want to do it well? Choosing paper type, stretching out the paper, pre-wetting parts, basically no way to undo mistakes - it all seemed very finicky to me when I tried it out once.
Well, more awesomeness points to you for doing it right :)

How do you work - like, did you do the background first, colouring the foreground above it later?

Thank you!
Yes, working with watercolour can be a really terrifying experience, especially wet-in-wet (which is how that background was done). Fortunately, I have an amazing teacher and mentor who has taught me everything I know about watercolour; the most important lesson being that you have to plan ahead and then go for it. If you are hesitant or tentative you have such a greater chance of failing. To that end, once I've inked the drawing and decided on colours and tones, I work as fast as I possibly can.

Much like most watercolourists, I work from lightest to darkest (which is why you have to plan ahead). In this painting I did the same, so I painted the yellowish portion of the background in a wash, leaving areas white where I wanted them, then layered in the darker areas. This can be tricky, of course, especially if there's an area you want to leave light in an inconvenient place!

Another key thing to have is the absolute best paper and paints you can afford. Don't waste your time trying to learn with crap paper or paints because they just won't behave in the way good quality materials will. And if you can find a teacher whose work you love, do everything you can to learn from them, because every watercolourist paints differently and has different techniques to pass on.

I hope some of that is helpful!

Haha, this is brilliant! The bird at the front looks like he's wondering if he should scold the renegade or not. :giggle:

Hehehe, that's pretty much the look I was going for. Either that or he's wondering if he should bring his bassoon to the next dawn sing-along.
